Fancy a Trip to the Isthmus of Panama?
On November 3rd, 1698 a sizable contingent of Scots emigrants landed at Darien in the Isthmus of Panama. This was one of Scotland's few colonial ventures of the 17th century and received significant financial support from the entire country. How did they fair? In one word, it was a disaster.
A brief snippet about their venture from HistoryScotland is here, a longer piece from HistoryToday is here, an even longer piece (though still not too long) plus suggestions for further reading from the BBC is here.
with thanks to @HistoryScotland and @HistoryToday.

Read the links and all --- Interesting! It wasn't all that much better when my Keyes folks crossed the Isthmus more than 150 years later.
